While everyone debates which AI model to use, Google decided to skip the conversation entirely. The company is quietly pushing Gemini Nano to billions of Chrome users worldwide. No opt-in dialog. No consent form. Just 4GB of neural network weights appearing on your hard drive like an uninvited guest who brought luggage.
According to a report by That Privacy Guy, Chrome silently downloads and installs Gemini Nano on user devices. The model lives in a cryptic weights.bin file tucked away in a folder called OptGuideOnDeviceModel. If you accidentally delete it, Chrome helpfully re-downloads the entire thing.

What Is Gemini Nano?
Gemini Nano is Google's smallest AI model, designed specifically for on-device inference. It's part of the Gemini family that includes the larger Pro and Ultra variants. The Nano version is optimized to run locally on phones and laptops without requiring cloud connectivity.
The model handles tasks like text summarization, smart reply suggestions, and basic question answering. Google positions it as a privacy-friendly option since data stays on your device. The irony of installing it without consent seems lost on them.
The Consent Problem
Google has a page called Built-in AI that documents these features. The documentation clearly states that Chrome downloads Gemini Nano with the browser. The information is technically public. But "technically public" and "properly communicated" are different things.
