The largest programming subreddit just defenestrated AI content from its feed. After months of meta-discussions drowning out actual programming talk, the community voted to ban AI and LLM topics entirely. Only deeply technical implementation discussions survive the purge.

Hi, my name is Tom Smykowski. I've spent 19 years building production systems and now write about AI-assisted development from a practitioner's perspective. On this blog I share insights on engineering, AI tools, and the realities of shipping software.

The subreddit r/programming has long been one of the go-to places for developers to discuss programming topics. But lately, something shifted. The feed became saturated with AI content that had little to do with actual programming. Not technical deep-dives into model architectures or clever implementations. Instead, endless variations of "how do you feel about AI" and "how to deal with AI taking your job."

The frustration built up over months. Subredditors noticed that on a channel supposedly dedicated to programming, you couldn't find anything about programming per se. Worse, many posts were obviously AI-generated. If you've spent any time reading AI slop, you know the tells.

So the community took action. In April, a vote took place. The results weren't pleasant for AI enthusiasts, and the decision was made to ban discussions related to AI and LLM entirely.

The Flood of Meta-Discussions

The problem wasn't AI itself. Technical discussions about implementing machine learning models, optimizing inference, or building AI-powered features would have been welcome. The problem was the bellicose meta-commentary that dominated every thread.

The voting results revealed something interesting. The community wasn't split. The majority wanted AI content gone. Not because they hate AI or fear it, but because they came to r/programming to discuss programming.
