๐Ÿ”’ Nobody Anticipated This: GitHub Can Lock You Out of Your Entire Business Overnight

One comment. One ban. Your entire startup goes dark. This is not a hypothetical scenario. It happened to Volodymyr Hordieiev, and it can happen to any of us.

Hi, my name is Tom Smykowski, I'm a staff full-stack engineer. I build and scale SaaS platforms to millions of users, working end-to-end from system architecture to frontend to mobile. On this blog I write about platform risks, developer tools, and building resilient software systems.

For a long time I wasn't worried about platform lock-in. I used GitHub like everyone else, pushed code, logged into other services with GitHub OAuth, and assumed the platform was stable. Then I read Volodymyr Hordieiev's LinkedIn post, and it made me shiver.

He wrote: "GitHub is holding my business hostage: A warning to all developers. I've been a loyal GitHub Copilot Pro Plus subscriber for over a year. Today, my business is paralyzed, and my intellectual property is inaccessible."

What apparently happened is straightforward and terrifying. Volodymyr was using GitHub like everyone of us. Had his projects on GitHub, used GitHub login to authenticate into other platforms. His startup projects were hosted there, and other platforms were tied to it through integrations.

The Cascade Effect

But this isn't just about GitHub. The effect spreads because other systems force you to use GitHub integrations and GitHub login.

Platforms like Vercel, Netlify, Railway, and Render. IDEs like Cursor, Codeium, and Replit. Services like Sentry and Supabase. They all lean towards strong integration with GitHub. Once your GitHub account is banned, you can't suddenly access any of these.

Can you imagine that? Your whole startup toolchain suddenly dead because GitHub banned you?

The full article covers what GitHub's Terms of Service actually allow them to do, why this isn't an isolated incident, and most importantly: a complete guide to protecting yourself and your organization from this scenario. You'll find checklists for assessing your blast radius, backup strategies, and alternative platforms to consider.
